Inspiration this Season

During this season I am asking the question, “What inspires you?”  I don’t mean to be trite or cliché, I sincerely want to know how people are inspired, as well as when, and what they do once they are inspired.  I’m particularly curious about inspiration that leads to long-term action.

For example, I continue to be “on the hunt” for long-term inspiration to stick with an exercise plan a lifestyle change that makes a difference for me, because I want to live healthfully.  Conversely, I continue to be inspired to work countless hours on behalf of children, those here and in far-off Africa.  Inspiration makes what seems impossible—possible.

I’m also curious about what inspires parents.  What motivates us to continue working on those math facts, or to be diligent readers with our children?  What inspires us to become better parents, or makes us change how we handle as our children as they grow and develop.

In our home, Dr. Gordon Neufeld’s teachings for parents is inspiring us to prioritize our relationships with our children. We strive to give each child  a secure attachment while being a compass point for them in order to provide guidance and support as individually needed.

As a result, we are trying some new things in our home, such as defining what we want to be and do for our children this holiday season, and buying gifts is only a small portion.  What I’m learning from Dr. Neufeld is inspiring some of these changes because his teaching is logical, well-grounded and thorough. Learning inspires me, especially pure learning.  For example, when Gracyn, our 5-month old, is learning how to roll over and scoot around.  We are cheering excitedly because watching her grow and develop is delightful.  We can’t get enough of it!

So, I’m playing around with the idea of inspiration, especially for all of us as parents.

But there is one question regarding inspiration that has been answered for me:  the true reason for this season inspires me.  The truth is that Immanuel, God with us, makes my heart come alive. To think that God himself arrived as a vulnerable baby one Christmas long ago. I am both deeply settled and deeply moved by this realization.

I hope you will join us throughout Advent-a time of remembrance of that truth for this season.  I know we will all benefit from being deeply settled and deeply moved by Jesus.

Also,  I would like to know what inspires you during this season.  I would  love to hear from you at :kvelhoen@firstlutheran.ca.

In Christ,
