Smart Goal Setting
December 7, 2011
As a school community, we began this year by having each student set goals for themselves. With the guidance of parents and teachers, the students endeavored to choose goals that were S.M.A.R.T. – Specific, Measureable, Attainable, Realistic and Timely. Having decided on two or three, the student then made a plan as to how they were going to accomplish their goals. Parents and teachers also had roles in supporting each student achieve their desired success.
At the end of Term 1 these are some reflections from the Grade 3 /4 class on the Goal Setting Process:
This year I wrote down three goals that I wanted to accomplish….I think that setting goals is important because it gives you something to look forward to and it also gives you something to accomplish and feel proud of. I think that every year we should make three goals because it is important to have something to get better and better at. I think that goal setting is very important.” Hannah Sandager – Grade 4
“At Back to School Night I made three goals. They were: keeping my desk clean; being on time; and completing my homework on time. Keeping my desk clean has improved a lot. My desk was really messy before but now it’s really clean. Being on time for school has worked well too. My parents used to have to wake me up early, but now I do it myself. Completing homework has worked so well that now I hand it in early!” Felix Jones – Grade 4
“I have improved on most of my goals this term. I have gotten better at multiplication, science, writing stories and handwriting. I have gotten better at these things because I practice handwriting at home; I do multiplication for math drills; and write stories and learn about science in class. I have really improved with my goals this term.” Logan Sloan – Grade 3
“When it was Back to School Night I made three goals and they were: to improve my speed in Mad Math Minutes; learn the alphabet in handwriting; and focus when there are distractions around me. I think that goals are good because they make you achieve what you want to achieve.”
Matthew Abetkoff – Grade 3
“At Back to School Night I made 3 goals for the year and they were: to be able to subtract better; work on the computer more; and increase my vocabulary. I did accomplish my 3 goals this term. It was a little hard but I did it! My mom and dad helped me with everything and my teachers did too!
Ava Reisdorf – Grade 3
“At Back to School Night I made 3 goals. My goals were to: work on my math skills; do my homework right after school; and to read more books. I have achieved all of my goals this term. I think that I can make more goals now!” Landon Schueler – Grade 4
